YOUNG AUSTRALIANS URGED TO HAVE THEIR SAY
The Australian Electoral Commission estimates there are 430,000 young Australians
between the ages of 18 and 24 who have not yet registered to vote.
Local Federal MP, Philip Ruddock is backing the AEC’s ‘Enrol to Vote’ week initiative – from 17 to 23rd May - and is urging all young adults to ‘register and have your say.’
‘Some people think that their one vote can’t make a difference, but I say each voice and each opinion is valuable.’
‘Having your vote is actually having your say on who runs your country. I doubt you’d miss the opportunity to have your say as to who is captain of your soccer team, or the indoor cricket team – so why miss out on having your say on who should run Australia?’
Enrolling and voting is compulsory by law, but more importantly it is one of the privileges of living in a democracy.
‘With a Federal election looming, I urge you to pick up an application form and enrol to vote now.’
Enrolment forms can be downloaded from the Australian Electoral Commission website, Australia Post outlets, AEC offices and Tax Office shopfronts, as well as Medicare and Centrelink offices.
‘My office would also be happy to send one to you if you request it.’
