COALITION’s PAID PARENTAL LEAVE PLAN

‘The family is the cornerstone of our society’.

This is how Philip Ruddock MP Federal Member for Berowra began his statement following the announcement of the Coalition’s Paid Parental Leave Plan.

‘The Coalition understands that starting a family is expensive and we are committed to alleviating some of the financial stress facing families by introducing a comprehensive paid parental leave scheme.’

‘Our plan will provide mothers with 26 weeks paid parental leave at full replacement wage, up to a maximum salary of $150,000 per year, or the federal minimum wage amount, whichever is the greater.’

Importantly, the Coalition’s plan will include superannuation contributions at the mandatory rate of 9%.

‘The plan also allows for two out of the 26 weeks to be dedicated paternity leave for fathers and can be taken at the same time or separately from the mother’s leave.’

Labor’s paid parental leave scheme makes no provision for paternity leave.

‘We would prefer to fund this scheme from a Budget surplus, but unfortunately this is not possible due to the large debt and deficits run up by the Labor Government.’

The Coalition’s plan will be funded by a 1.5% levy on companies with taxable incomes in excess of $5 million.

Mr Ruddock suggested that anyone wishing to find out more about this, or any other Coalition policy, ‘should call my campaign number – 98751190 – to obtain further material.’
