HELPING YOUNG PEOPLE MAKE A SUCCESSFUL TRANSITION FROM SCHOOL TO WORK

The Hon Philip Ruddock MP, Member for Berowra, today welcomed the launch of an initiative to assist young people in the Central Northern Sydney region to make a successful transition from school to further education, training or work.

Youth Pathways is part of the Australian Government’s $143 Million investment in the Career Advice Australia initiative and will provide young Australians aged 13-19 years with wider access to support services.

“The Career Advice Australia initiative supports the young people of Central Northern Sydney region as they make their transition from school to work,” Mr Ruddock said.

The programme will be implemented by Mission Australia who will provide career and transition support to at-risk young people, helping them to complete Year 12 and make a successful transition to the next stage in their career, education or training.

“It is an exciting initiative and I congratulate Mission Australia for their efforts in assisting Australian youth to realise their educational and career potential,” Philip Ruddock said.

“The Government is committed to helping young people identify and work towards achieving their future career pathway and will strengthen the quality of education and training for individuals and the Central Northern Sydney communities.”

From 2007, with an additional $46 million allocated over four years Youth Pathways will provide assistance to at least 25,500 young people. This will make a total of $37 million for each calendar year until 2010, an increase of about $13 million each year above what was available in 2006.
