HILLSIDE PUBLIC SCHOOL GLENORIE RECEIVES SHADE STRUCTURES

The Member for Berowra, Phillip Ruddock MP celebrated with Hillside Public School, Glenorie NSW the completion of their shade structures project.

“Hillside Public School received $101,971 under the Investing in Our Schools Program. This funding has allowed the construction of covered walkways and enhancements to the existing covered outdoor learning area and I congratulate the principal, Mr Glenn Daniels, staff, P & C and students on this achievement,” Mr Ruddock said.

The covered walkways integrate the various school buildings and give students and staff protection from inclement weather. The covered outdoor learning area is the heart of the school where all assemblies, functions and presentations are held. Extending the veranda to create a stage area provides a better space for school band performances, student presentations and visiting dignitaries and speakers.

“The $1 billion Investing in Our Schools Program was announced by the Prime Minister during the 2004 federal election campaign and in February 2007, was increased by $181 million. $127 million will be provided for state government schools and $54 million for non-government schools in Australia,” Philip Ruddock said.

“The Program will now provide a massive $1.2 billion in total, $827 million of which will help state government schools fund small scale infrastructure projects identified and prioritised by school communities. A total of $354 million will be provided for non-government schools over the life of the Program.

“By focusing on delivering small-scale projects that have been identified as a priority by school communities, the Australian Government is providing local communities with a voice to determine what they think is important for their schools.”

Successful applications for 2006 Round Three have been announced, bringing the total amount of approved projects for IOSP funding to more than 15,000, providing important benefits to around 6,166 government schools across Australia.

Government school communities are able to apply for funding for such projects as air-conditioning, shade structures, computer equipment and upgrades, musical and sporting equipment.

Funding under the Program is in addition to the nearly $1.7 billion provided by the Australian Government to support government school capital works projects undertaken by State and Territory Governments over the 2005-2008 quadrennium.
