CITIZENSHIP TEST LAUNCHED ON AUSTRALIAN CITIZENSHIP DAY

The Member for Berowra, Philip Ruddock MP said today that the Federal government launched Australia’s new Citizenship Test and resource book Becoming an Australian Citizen.

“The Citizenship Test provides the means of ensuring that prospective citizens understand and appreciate Australian values, culture and history,” Mr Ruddock s said.

Prospective citizens would have access to a free resource book which includes all the information required to sit the computer-based test.

An information campaign to support the introduction of the Citizenship Test will also begin today. The first tests will be sat from 1 October 2007

Australian Citizenship Day is being celebrated all around Australia today, with hundreds of people becoming citizens at ceremonies being held across Australia.

A Citizenship Test preparation webpage will be developed to help applicants understand the full range of assistance available, including links to Australian Government-funded English language programmes

The Let’s Participate course will also be updated to reflect the new material contained in the Citizenship Test resource book.

“Before becoming a citizen it is reasonable to expect that a person will understand the core values that have helped to create a society that is stable yet dynamic, cohesive yet diverse,” Philip Rudodck said.

The resource book is available at www.minister.immi.gov.au
