VALE – MAURICE SMITH OAM
The Member for Berowra, Philip Ruddock MP stated his sadness at the passing of local identity Maurice Smith OAM.
“Maurice was a popular local and his passing marks the end of a very special era, as he was an outstanding local citizen and a true gentle man. He served the community for decades, particularly in the Auburn area where he served on Auburn Council with distinction,” Mr Ruddock said.
“Maurie’s years are well documented in the time he served Auburn Council but it did not stop there, Maurie helped so many people in the local area over a long time even when he moved to live in the Hornsby district with his daughter Lyn.”
“During my years in public life, I have had the opportunity to know many inspiring and successful Australians however it is such people as Maurie that we should be grateful to,” Philip Ruddock said.
Maurice received a number of significant awards such as the Rotary Paul Harris Award and the New South Wales’ Premier’s Award and most importantly to be awarded with an Order of Australia last year.
“Maurie not only served his community up to his 90th plus birthday but also his country during World War ll. His smiling face and good naturedness will be greatly missed and I extend my sympathy to his daughter Lyn, who lives locally, and her family,” Philip Ruddock said.
