NATURAL DISASTER MITIGATION PROGRAM (NDMP) - COUNCILS AND ELIGIBLE ORGANISATIONS MAY APPLY

The Member for Berowra, Philip Ruddock MP said today that Natural Disaster Mitigation Funding for Round 2008-2009 is now open.

“The Natural Disaster Mitigation Program aims to identify and address natural disaster risk priorities and I urge local councils and eligible organisations to apply,” Mr Ruddock said.

Funds are available for a range of measures that contribute to safer, sustainable communities better able to withstand the effects of natural disasters.

This program is being jointly funded by Commonwealth, State and local governments to help local communities better prepare for natural disasters such as floods, bushfires, storms or landslides.

These projects will do much to improve the safety of NSW communities, resulting in measures that will not only reduce property damage and the threat to lives but also the distress and disruption experienced by so many people in times of disaster.

“The aim is to help communities mostly through their local councils to clearly assess the risks they face locally and introduce measures to help manage and minimise those risks,” Philip Ruddock said.

Information on this program is available at the Emergency Management Australia website as examples are listed below:
· Natural disaster risk management studies;
· Disaster mitigation strategies;
· Disaster resilient infrastructure investments;
· Mitigation measures for all natural hazards;
· Disaster warning systems;
· Community awareness and readiness measures;

materials;
