RECORD PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE NUMBERS
The Member for Berowra, Philip Ruddock MP said that figures released y by the Private Health Insurance Administration Council (PHIAC) show that a record 10.9 million Australians held private health insurance membership at the end of June 2008.
“These results show that people want choice when it comes to health care and an extra 57,058 Australians are now covered by private health insurance, taking the pressure off public hospitals.
“The increase shows that the 30 per cent rebate, Lifetime Health Cover for people over 30, and the Medicare Levy Surcharge are effective in encouraging local residents to take out health insurance,” Mr Ruddock said.
“Interestingly, the largest increase in private hospital membership during the June quarter was in the 25 to 29 age group.
“An additional 53,313 Australians aged 25 to 29 took out health insurance. This is the group most likely to drop their health insurance if the Government’s proposed changes proceed.
“These people are not only looking after their own health but are instrumental in ensuring a balanced and effective Australian health system.
“The Rudd Government is determined to undermine the role of private health in Australia by introducing disincentives. Mr Rudd will be responsible for any increase in insurance premiums and public hospital waiting lists,” Philip Ruddock said.
