REFUGEE WEEK IS A TIME TO CELEBRATE

The Member for Berowra, Philip Ruddock MP said today that the Coalition wholeheartedly lends its support to the activities of Refugee Week and congratulates the organisers for their dedication and hard work.

“Refugee Week this year will be celebrated from 15-20 June and it is important that everyone participates. I know that the Migrant Network Services in Hornsby is always behind this important week and I congratulate Sue Maddrell and her team in their efforts,” Mr Ruddock said.

“The Coalition has a long and proud history of resettling refugees mandated by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and who have been found to be suffering the most appalling circumstances and in need of our urgent protection.

“Our commitment to a well-funded and managed refugee resettlement program has never faltered. It was the Coalition in Government that was responsible for providing the highest annual number of resettlement places to UNHCR refugees in Australia’s history at 6,000 places– and that number has been maintained by the government.

“Australians can be rightly proud of the effort it takes to successfully resettle those who have fled persecution. Australia is, with the USA and Canada, one of only a few countries to offer a permanent home to refugees invited to Australia from the most strife torn places in the world.

“World Refugee Day is June 20 and I encourage all to join in their local activities,” Philip Ruddock said.
