INVESTING IN OUR SCHOOLS PROGRAM
The Member for Berowra, Philip Ruddock MP said today that the health prevention program, Heart Health, has been so successful in delivering long term health benefits for Vietnam veterans, that the Australian Government has now made the program available to more veterans.
“Held over a 52 week period, Heart Health focuses on improving the mental and physical well-being of Vietnam veterans through regular exercise and information sessions about how to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and promotes strategies to help veterans maintain those improvements,” Mr Ruddock said.
“Since it first started in 2000, Heart Health has assisted more than 5000 veterans towards a healthier lifestyle. More than 70 per cent of participants continue the good habits learnt on the program, reaping significant health, fitness and social benefits.”
Participants of the program report overall increase in fitness levels, improved nutrition and increased energy for life. They also report social and psychological benefits, including decreased depressive and other symptoms, less need for counselling, increased motivation, and improved relationships with others.
“The program has been so successful that the Australian Government will now extend the program beyond Vietnam veterans. This is particularly good news for veterans of recent conflicts. Accessing a proven health prevention program at a younger age, will reap longer term benefits for these veterans,” Philip Ruddock said.
The Department of Veterans’ Affairs, through Heart Health and other health and well-being programs, is helping veterans address conditions associated with alcohol and tobacco consumption, and assist them in making lifestyle choices around their health. Veterans interested in the Heart Health program can contact their nearest Vietnam Veterans Counselling Service (VVCS) on 1800 011 046.
